Yin Yoga with Shazia Gogia

Sat, Feb 14, 2015 – 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm Guest Instructor

Yin yoga maintains joints stability and helps prevent joint rigidity by nourishing degenerative tissues and also by nourishing the meridians. Yin Yoga works the connective tissues of the ligaments, fascia, joints, spine and bones, and the energetic channels of the meridians, nerves and blood system. Primary connective tissues include the hips, thighs and lower spinal area.

In yin, we stretch the muscles without engaging them. If we stress ligaments appropriately without strain, we grow back stronger and more pliant after a steady yin practice. Over time, we can maintain elasticity of our joints.

The long held passive poses in yin give time for a deeper journey into the meditative aspects of yoga and experiencing stillness at a deeper level.

In this workshop, you will learn:

  • Basic Yin poses, their yin names, muscles they work

  • Major joints and systems used in yin practice

  • Several Poses for major muscles and joints for lower body.

  • Breath for Yin

  • Yin sequencing and timing

  • Offering props, modifications for those with physical limitations

COST:   $59

Anatomy & Physiology-Hips to Head

Sat, Feb 28, 2015 – 11:00 am - 5:00 pm Justine

The human body is remarkable and complex. A comprehensive study of the principles of Anatomy and Physiology is a core requirement for yoga teachers. Whether you are in training to become a new yoga teacher, or have been teaching for years, A&P is one of the areas we can all use a deeper understanding of.

We will explore the principles of A & P to gain a greater understanding of how yoga asana can support the body to be in its greatest health. As the body goes, so goes the mind and spirit.

The anatomy of the arms will be covered, with particular attention to the shoulder joint and rotator cuff anatomy. Free form movements linked to breath versus weight bearing movements will be discussed as well as knowing when to employ what movements for your students. Visceral anatomy will be covered, including peristalsis and why Yoga is so good for digestion!  Suggested Reading: Anatomy of Movement – Chapters 3, 4 and 5.

This session meets 200-hour requirements for yoga teacher training, and Continuing Education requirements.
